Datastore: ESXI:NAS:ISCSI:NFS

What Is A Datastore?:
datastore

A data store is a repository of a set of data objects. These objects are modeled using classes defined in a database schema. A data store is a general concept that includes not just repositories like databases, but also simpler store types such as flat files etc

Datastore Classification under VMware -Virtual Infrastructure

Datastores
are logical containers, analogous to file systems, that hide specifics of each storage device and provide a uniform model for storing virtual machine files. Datastores can also be used for storing ISO images, virtual machine templates, and floppy images.

What is software iSCSI Storage?

SCSI terminology, LUN stands for logical unit number. A LUN represents an individually addressable (logical) SCSI device that is part of a physical SCSI device (target). In an iSCSI environment, LUNs are essentially numbered disk drives

SCSI storage area networks have been around for more than a decade now. They originally arose as a cut-price alternative for smaller organisations that needed block storage but couldn’t run to the cost and complexity of Fibre Channel.

For some time they were the SME-targeted little brother to market leader Fibre Channel in terms of performance and reliability. But, iSCSI SAN products are now a fully-featured part of most storage array maker’s product ranges and with the speed of 10Gbps Ethernet and careful network design can be the equal of Fibre Channel.

Vcloud Director Server Group: System Relationship

Vcloud Director server group is composed of one or more Vcloud  Director servers. Each Vcloud Director server is also known as cell. All of the Vcloud Director servers must connect to as Single Vcloud Director Database.

Resource Clusters, each Vcenter server system has it’s own Vcenter Server Database also.  Each Vcenter server system in the group of resource cluster must connect to it’s own vShield Manage Server. There must be one-to-one ratio of Vshield Manager servers to Vcenter Server systems.

What Is Virtualization?

What is Virtualization? A single most effective way to reduce IT expenses while boosting efficiency and agility—not just for large enterprises, but for small and midsize businesses too. VMware virtualization lets you: Run multiple operating systems and applications on a single computer.

Here is a great overview video on Virtualization created by VMware

To help understand what is virtualization, we will break down the virtualization core individual components:

Below is a representation of Individual Core Components:

1.ESXI-Hardware/CPU/Memory,
2. VMware Data Recovery/ Vmotion – Disaster Recovery/Back up and Failover.
3. NAS /SAN:(Openfiler): Data stores/Storage.

If you follow the posting, I have separated each core components,  For example, ESXI installation(Hardware/CPU/Memory), NAS/NFS(Openfiler installation and configuration), and VMware Data Recovery( VDR) Install and Configuration Guides.

Illustrated Examples:

1.ESXI-Host : Horse power/Hardware component such as CPU and Memory.

Vcloud Service Models

  • Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)

The capability provided to the consumer is to provision processing, storage, networks, and other fundamental computing resources where the consumer is able to deploy and run arbitrary software, which can include operating systems and applications. The consumer does not manage or control the underlying cloud infrastructure but has control over operating systems, storage, and deployed applications; and possibly limited control of select networking components (e.g., host firewalls).

  • Platform as a Service (PaaS)

The capability provided to the consumer is to deploy onto the cloud infrastructure consumer-created or acquired applications created using programming languages, libraries, services, and tools supported by the provider.

The consumer does not manage or control the underlying cloud infrastructure including network, servers, operating systems, or storage, but has control over the deployed applications and possibly configuration settings for the application-hosting environment

  • Software as a Service (SaaS)

The capability provided to the consumer is to use the provider’s applications running on a cloud infrastructure.

The applications are accessible from various client devices through either a thin client interface, such as a web browser (e.g., web-based email), or a program interface. The consumer does not manage or control the underlying cloud infrastructure including network, servers, operating systems, storage, or even individual application capabilities, with the possible exception of limited user specific application configuration settings.

Vcloud: Service Models

There are a number of ways in which cloud services can be delivered. In this section we review the commonly accepted definitions of the various services and their delivery models.

The X as a Service (XaaS) models are important concepts to understand and predate the definition of cloud services. XaaS defines the type of service being delivered; delivery models:

To understand delivery models, you must grasp the concepts of consumer and provider:Consumer A consumer is the user—the person or organization that requests, uses, and releases resources and services. This involves the processing of data using the services provided. In some instances, the consumer may be another application or software process rather than a human consumer.

  • Provider A provider is the person or organization that deals with delivering and provisioning the resources and services to the consumer. This involves installing hardware and software and typically using automation and workflows to simplify the process for the consumer while delivering a low operational cost to the provider.

openfiler Openfiler

This document is targeted  configuration of  Openfiler NAS solution for ESXI-Network File System(NFS) and Mounting Newly NFS Datastore to ESXI host.

The purpose and scope in implementing Openfiler is  test/check other VMware vSphere server 5.X advanced features

*Storage VMotion,
*VMware High Availability (VMHA),
*VMware Distributed Resource Scheduler (DRS).

 Scope of the document:

Cover only Openfiler System Configuration, Security Access Control, and Create New Datastore Share, Mount Newly Created Datastore to ESXI Host(s).

We will be using Openfiler on Vmware 10 Workstation to illustrate step by step, Configuring Openfiler NAS access control list and security configuration,  creating NFS datastore mount points, allow ESXI host mount a newly create NFS Datastore.
